Creating Your Personal Brand Identity

Your Personal Brand Identity Is Your Name

We all are given a name at birth, Right? Now don’t laugh, Seriously how many of us really give much thought to this?

Can you remember the first time you learned your name or how about the first time you wrote it?

Did you ever think this would be your brand identity for life?

Creating Your Personal Brand Identity

I attended a graduation a few years ago and I was pretty impressed with one of the speakers and thought I would share her story with you here today.

She started talking about how in kindergarten we are taught how to write our name.

You first learn how to hold that pencil and draw out the letters from the alphabet.

Your teacher then helps you put those letters together to form your name, when you go home, your parents, siblings and perhaps even your grandparents all partake in this first big event.

You practice and practice writing your name until you get it just right.

Your Personal Brand Identity Is Your Reputation

This is the beginning of building your brand identity, your signature, your reputation!

Little did you know at this time in your life that something so important was taking place.

How many times do you think you wrote your name on the top of your papers while you were in school?

Every paper had your signature right at the top! I bet you can’t even come close to the number of times you have done this over the years.

Then you graduate and you sign that diploma with your signature.

Your Personal Brand Identity This Is The Beginning Of Your Adult Life

I bet many of us at this point didn’t really even think about our name being our brand identity or how important that this is going to be for us in the future.

When I got married I was very confused about what to do.

Do I keep my maiden name, my husbands name or use both?

Well I did make the decision to take on my husband’s last name.

I guess this is a choice all of us girls come across when we get married. It was a tough one for me! My new brand identity began my new name, my brand and my signature.

Your Personal Brand Identity

When someone does a Google search for your name, what will they find?

Creating Your Personal Brand Identity

You had better hope that it will be something you want there.

Your personal brand identity is all about who you are and what you want to be known for.

This is the age of the internet and anything you do online can and will be found.

Are you even curious?

Well here is a great free tool that you can use.

You will need to have a Google G-Mail account to use this, but anyone can get one, it will only take you a few minutes to get this set up.

“”Branding Tip Choose YOUR “FULL NAME” As Your G-Mail Address””

Click here to go to Google Alert

Creating Your Personal Brand Identity

Now Put your name in the search query and then click create an alert. Now anytime your name comes up online you will be notified by e-mail.

It is very important to keep track of this sort of information, this is your brand identity, Yeppers Your Reputation, and this is how others see YOU!

I like to Google myself regularly to see if there is anything off-brand so to say, yet another way to check out my brand identity.

Make sure every thing that you write is something you’d be proud to have associated with your brand, both today and years down the road.

How do you think people see you?

Do you have a Bio made?

Is it something you can call your own?

I am in the process of branding myself with a self-hosted website in the making. It is very interesting when one Googles oneself. I have discovered another Liz Delaney out there who uses the URL I wanted. Never mind. First in, first served….
Thanks Chery. I enjoyed this post.

    Hey Chery,

I am Googler and every time I Google my name, I try to see what it is like…how the search are bringing it up and all those other stuffs and thus far I think I’m impress…

And yes………..we are our brand and we need to build and quality value to our lives…I love Ryan when it comes to brand building…you know why? He’s done a really nice job in selling himself to his world and they’ve come to love and appreciate his personality which therefore has raised his reputation and credibility amongst bloggers.

I think the issue of building our personal brand identity cannot be more than emphasized…you did a really nice job ma’am – and did I tell you I love that little story of that girl at the girl graduation. :)

    • says

Hello Sam!! That Little girl is kind of like my daughter, and yes the story she told really has a lot of meaning to your brand. YOUR NAME!!

I do agree with you about Ryan He has done an Awesome Job with his brand identity, how can you not Love HIM LOL He is certainly an inspiration for all of us..

Thanks for adding to the conversation today, I do appreciate it!! Chery :))

When I started online I thought it fun to create nicknames which were a play on words. First I started with HiHowRU and it amused me when people greeted me with this. Then I moved on to my first name with such nicknames as Sueperlative, Sueblimely and SueDiNim for when I want to keep anonymous :-)

Sueblimely stuck and I think i am stuck with it although I am trying to always associate it with my real name. Having Bride as a surname means that I do compete with bridal companies and I believe there is also a Sue Bride doll. I bought my name in a domain name a few years ago and have not yet decided how best to use it!

    • says

Hello Sue! I know alot of us know Our Sue Bride and “”Sueblimely”” Somehow I think it suites you HEHE My first blog was Chery’s Online Game Plan. My first name was there BUT Yeh It was just not me! Branding does all have to do with whom and what you want to be know for.. Thanks so much for sharing your story with us today, always nice to see you here.. Chery :))

      • says

I forgot to mention that it was hard to develop a personal brand when I was at high school. Out of the two classes in my year level there were 14 Susan’s! Almost 25% of us had the name.

  4. says

I think that i have branded myself with my name… but I still haven’t established a brand that I “stick” strongly to represent what I am and do… I great perspective you have here… I think that I shall do your assignment and see what I come up with!! I have to admit I kept my maiden name… and added part of my married name because the whole thing is too long.. however I have been told that what I have is too long!!

    • says

Hello Holly! It is always a work in progress that’s for sure, The good things is that we have a lifetime to work on it HEHE Thanks for sharing your story with us.. I think You’re doing an Awesome job my friend.. Chery :))

  5. says

I’m so glad to see you address this topic Chery. I became aware of the importance of my personal brand a few years ago when around the same time I divorced I was also preparing to publish my first book. First there was the issue of going back to my maiden name, which was easy enough legally but we’d been married 25 years so no one knew me by my maiden name! Then there was the fact that for most of my life I’d been known by a nickname rather than my legal name so I struggled with the question of which first name to go by – and it didn’t help matters that my legal name is one that many people have trouble pronouncing let alone remembering. Anyway, it took me awhile to sort through it all and establish a consistent online and business profile but the exercise helped me to truly appreciate what goes into building a personal brand!

Hello Marty! Wowsy Wow wow! HEHE That is the way I am feeling right now, how does one know what to do HUH? We do need to make the choice and run with it HUH? You are SOOO Awesome GF!!!! Thanks for sharing your story with us here today.. Chery :))

  6. says

    Hi Chery,
Great post. I don’t think people really do understand that. I know I didn’t when I first came online. I was always trying to think of cutesie names and then I just decided the heck with it and used my own name. I didn’t realize that was the best decision I ever made online. I did have a time of it going through the transition when I got married from the name Davis to Ellithorpe but I think my first name helped with that. I didn’t realize there were so many people out there with my name and spelling (2 N’s) Monna.

Have a great evening. Monna (like Donna but with an “M”)

    • says

Hey Monna! “Donna but with a M” You are so Awesome! Branding ourselves is something we all need to work in to HUH? We all have to start somewhere My Friend! Thanks for all your help!! Chery :))

The sweetest sound that any of us can here is our own name, spoken with love and respect and tenderness. What a nice reminder that there was a time when we first learned how to write our own name. How exciting that must have been. And now, with digital payments, we can scribble our name unintelligibly, but it is still our own way of writing our own name. And a name does help us to create our brand. There is often a story behind the way our name was chosen.

    Hi Chery,

I once set up a Google Alert for my name, Twitter handle, and my business name because I wanted to listen in when people were talking about me or my company. I received an email every time somebody mentioned us. It was a great way to stay up to date on mentions without having to constantly Google myself and perfect for alertinme to customer feedback and managing my reputation.

    • says

Hello Rachel! I get a few e-mails everyday from Google Alerts, It is interesting to learn who and where your name is showing up HUH? Thanks for adding to the conversation here today.. Chery :))
  13. says

    Hi Chery,
after reading your post I did a Google search for my name, which I had not done for a year or so.
Great tips on the google alert subject!
Recently I talked to an elderly lady who does not own a computer but someone had ‘googled’ her and she was surprised that she popped up. She is the local organiser of the knitting group called “Operation cover up” who send knitted items to children in orphnages in Europe.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I love the reference to when a girl gets married and then has to choose what to do about her name. Generations ago it was very clear that the woman simply took the mans name without question but now it is a very different story. This is especially true dependent on what type of industry that you work in. It is clear to tell what decision that I made but yet it has not always been clear. I believe that many women struggle with this.

    • says

Hello Elise, It is a different world from when we had to make this choice that is for sure.. Change is inevitable HUH?
This is a tough decision for us to make, not one we should take lightly either, this is our Brand here.. Thanks for bringing
this up, of course this is a touchy subject for us gals LOL
      .. Chery :))
